chapter synopsis/scans: chapter eight [sept '03]
いつか、君の名を呼ぶ日まで
( Itsuka, kimi no na wo yobu hi made - Someday, till the day I call your name )

Two Orphan members tell Aya and Yuki to escape - the police have arrived. Aya and Yuki comply; pausing at a wire-mesh gate, Yuki thinks about the fact that the police had no knowledge of Blue Eyes', and is frustrated that his comrades are thought of as trash. Just then, though, Aya shoves Yuki down to take cover, for the police have caught up.

As Yuki listens to the conversation, he draws the kau sin ke from his jacket, growing visibly agitated. When the police attack, he helps Aya to hold them off. The remaining officer pleads with Yuki not to kill him, to which Yuki replies, a single tear streaking down his cheek, that that he would not break his promise ( not to kill ) because of them.

Aya and Yuki turn back towards the gate, Yuki opening it and stepping through first - almost instantly, Aya closes the gate behind Yuki, keeping him on the other side. When Yuki calls his name in shock, Aya says that the policemen's comrades are arriving, telling Yuki to leave by himself. At Yuki's protest, Aya merely smiles, saying "You'll tend all our graves, won't you? Yuki."

Yuki: ...we'll still meet again, won't we?
Aya: ...yeah. At that time...just call.
Yuki: I'll also...be able to be like you, won't I?
Aya: ...if you can't...it's okay too...when's there's peace.

Yuki leaves. As he evades the police, he thinks: "Someday, surely --"

Meanwhile, despite Aya's efforts, he is no match for the large group of policemen. As he's kicked and beaten by them, katana pinned to the ground by one of their shoes, he remembers a meeting of some time ago.

The setting is the side of a pier somewhere. Aya, sitting down at the edge, turns when his name is called. He addresses the person first as Omi; then, correcting himself, calls him Takatori Mamoru instead. Mamoru asks Aya if he still hasn't changed his mind. Aya says he hasn't, and that if Weiss is to continue operating as a group solely for the sake of the Takatori name, then he will never be able to fight alongside Mamoru - he says that he will continue this job by his own means.

Mamoru says he wouldn't want Aya to kill if it's not for Takatori, for if he does so he'll be caught immediately, and Mamoru doesn't want that to happen. Aya counters that there are other groups like Weiss around the world, and there are places that welcome people like himself.

Mamoru pauses, then asks, hesitantly, if Aya hates him. For a while there is no response - then Aya asks if Omi ( not Mamoru ) is happy. With the hint of a smile, Mamoru replies that he is. Aya says, then, that he has neither hate nor a grudge, and that because of Omi's past ( losing his memories, killing his family etc. ) he can understand whatever unpleasant things there are. Mamoru asks if that also includes the betrayal of friends. Aya says that's different - everyone has the right to be happy, and if that right is called 'betrayal', he doesn't know what people have to live for.

Mamoru: Only...'happiness' is not something that can be achieved through one's strength alone. When people hope for another's happiness, that person will be happy. Since Omi says he is happy now, that is because there are many people who have hoped for Omi's happiness.
Aya: Though it's childish, whether it's through kindness or a sense of sympathy, won't people...be happy? (with a smile) Is that wrong?

Mamoru is shocked at first, but then smiles, agreeing.

Mamoru: ...thank you, Aya-kun. ...so, this is goodbye, isn't it? But please don't forget, I'm also wishing for Aya-kun's happiness. No matter where Aya-kun may be, forever, yeah...?

And there the flashback ends. Aya, still enduring the violence, thinks of Omi, and something that the younger boy had said before - that " 'weiss' is the heart protected by those of white".

Aya: (thinking) That's so, isn't it, Omi? Therefore...I can't...can't die yet...

By now he's coughing up blood, left to lie where he collapsed. One of the policemen says that they'll leave him there, since they aren't murderers, but - calling him trash - adds that they'll let him freeze to death in this cold instead. They're about to leave when a voice asks, smoothly, which one of them is the trash. Turning around, the policemen meet Chloe; billowing cape, rose petals and all. Chloe makes a dramatic speech and takes care of the policemen easily. While Aya stares in surprise, thinking "Still these people-!", Mihirogi speaks to him.

Mihirogi: Since they were policemen, you chose to hold back? A pretty well-behaved cat, no?

Aya stares for a while, unspeaking, then asks haltingly if they have come to kill him. It turns out that they have found out all about him, and Mihirogi invites him to do business with them. She introduces them as Krypton Brand ( KB ), a group that can properly suit his way of life, and welcomes him to their side.
