chapter synopsis/scans: chapter ten [dec '03] 最強のコンビネーション ( Saigou no Konbineeshyon - The strongest combination ) Face-off. Ken comments on having kept Aya waiting, and when Aya asks what Ken's doing here, says that Omi was kind enough to lead him there. Apparently, KR had spoken with Omi for the sake of investigating Aya. Omi had said he knew Aya's whereabouts, and: Omi: You'd like to go, wouldn't you, Ken-kun? Ken: Yeah! ( ^_^;; very eloquent, Ken. ) Omi: I'm praying for your happiness. In any case, Ken says something about how he no longer has a relation to the past, and that he'll build a future where he's Aya's partner. On that cue, then, the fight starts: with Ken and Aya, originally of Weiss, versus Krypton Brand's Michel and Chloe. The rules are simple: each of them has a rose pinned to their chest, and once that rose is removed, they're considered defeated. The team of the last person remaining, wins. It's a 3-on-3 team battle - KR joins Aya and Ken, to Ken's skepticism...said skepticism extends as well to Mihirogi, who's part of the other team. KR reassures him, and goes on at length for a while. But the fight's already begun - Mihirogi, wielding a pair of swords, attacks, agreeing and KR and saying that even she, who's always a mission planner, is a splendid Amazoness. There is a lot more talking which I am, unfortunately, too lazy to translate, but it's mostly complimenting of skills and such. So...fighting, Ken has detachable claws, Chloe calls Aya a Japanese ninja, in addition to a Japanese samurai...and eventually Mihirogi's taken out of the fight by KR. Ken, for his part, takes out Michel. Chloe takes out KR, with a polite 'pardon me', and Aya's katana is broken. As the three defeated ones watch from the sidelines, Chloe reveals one of his tricks: to quote directly from his oft-used English, "Cage of cusp." Thorned vines surround Ken and Aya. More talking. Ken says a lot...translation to follow eventually, but the tail end is as such: Ken: After you and I parted, I've been learning on my own, always. I wondered what was left for me. You lived like that and departed from Japan, but what about me, who'd lost Weiss? ...just live as a murderer, with only memories? Only that? But it was different. I'm myself. While resting, when my eyes were opened - I didn't like it, but feelings were stirred. I'm still alive. ( KR departs surreptitiously. ) So, I thought I should go to the place I wanted to most. Aya, it's where you were, you know? That's why you came here, isn't it? This is different from the past. I spoke with the boss, and I understand well. So my place is here. To me, you're a necessity. Shinigami Aya, you see? This is my answer. It has nothing to do with your opinion! Aya: ... Really like a naggy wife. Should you speak of people's matters? Ken: Shut up! That's why you came to play this role, isn't it! Incomprehensible guy! They exchange grins. Aya: ...Do what you want! Ken: Right! So they charge towards Chloe, who speaks smugly about tactics and that fact that Aya's sword is broken. Ken tells him to shut up and watch, then calls to KR - who obliges by throwing a katana towards Aya. Aya's original katana, apparently. Aya catches it and starts charging toward Chloe, who remains unimpressed - until the length of...er, ribbon?...attached to Ken's claws helps Aya to leap over the fence of thorns. Aya cuts Chloe's rose off in style, and thus the fight ends. it starts to rain; Aya, panting and leaning on his katana for support, asks if there is value to them. Chloe is contemplative, looking at Aya's katana. Chloe: ...yes. ...Is that the cross you were talking about...? Scene changes, eventually, to Ken and Aya standing by a balcony. Ken: ...I met Youji. That guy was alive. ( Aya looks shocked. ) He's happy, you know? Married a woman. ( Ken smiles sadly. ) ...forgot everything... ...his memory isn't going to return again. I went, but he didn't know me at all. Even though I said "I'm a friend"...he didn't know. That guy just carried your katana like it was really important. Youji: [flashback] -- I don't really understand, but ...There's the feeling that I can't carry this around. So...could you do me the favour of ferrying it over? To the real...owner... Ken: ......"Aya", he said. The owner. Youji: [flashback] ...Aya. Could you do me the favour of helping? To that...friend of mine... ( as he hands the katana over ) Thank you. For the lateness of returning this, I'm sorry... Aya: ( looking sad, wistful, not -quite- smiling. ) ....Since he's happy, that's good. Ken: Isn't it? ...in any case, though I was sad, I was happy--... At this point, Michel comes up to them cheerfully, dragging a rather perplexed Aya and Ken along by their arms, down a corridor. He says that he's talked with KR and Mihirogi ( he calls her by her first name, Nana ) and he understands that they're becoming his comrades. Thus, he thanks them, in slightly awkward Japanese. Ken and Aya look bewildered at first, but then smile slightly, in a fond sort of way. As they follow Michel down the hall, and they look out to see that it's begun snowing instead, Aya thinks of Yuki. Splash page for Chapter Ten - Ken, in colour. Chapter Ten - Omi in flashback. 1 | 2 Chapter Ten - KR and Mihirogi can hold their own in a fight. Chapter Ten - So can Michel, of course. Chapter Ten - Detachable claws. Chapter Ten - Michel gets taken out of the game. Chapter Ten - Watching from the sidelines. Chapter Ten - You've got to wonder what else Chloe can do, really. Chapter Ten - A rather...um, touching moment. ( Enlarged panel ) Chapter Ten - The katana returns. 1 | 2 Chapter Ten - How the fight ends. 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 Chapter Ten - Youji in flashback. 1 | 2 Chapter Ten - Michel, trying to make new friends. Chapter Ten - And Aya and Ken don't seem to mind. |
